Cambridge Public Bus Route

Transit Service Keeps People Moving

The Chisago-Isanti County Heartland Express offers public transit in rural areas and cities throughout its two service counties. Anyone can use their service to ride to work, school, college, medical appointments, shopping, day care outings, volunteer work, senior dining sites, beauty or barber shops, restaurants, and more.

The state funds the Heartland Express with joint support from Chisago and Isanti Counties. The transportation agency’s mission is to provide prompt, friendly, cost-effective service and to maintain its position as a leader in the transit system.

The bus service runs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday thru Friday (Cambridge City route is from 8am to 5pm), with office hours and calls answered until 5:00 pm. People can purchase transit tokens at area businesses or pay cash for the curb-to-curb service. Local tokens may be purchased at the transit centers or at Cub Foods in Cambridge, Riverside Market in Isanti, County Market in North Branch, Brinks Market in Chisago City or at Rush City Foods in Rush City. Bus drivers cannot make change.

Fares start as low as 75 cents for some in-city routes to a few dollars, depending on the destination and “zone” of travel required.

Heartland Express advises that for the best service, riders should schedule service by 2:00 pm the day before their appointment. Any children younger than seven years must be accompanied by an adult. Riders have no restrictions or requirements about how often they ride. All buses are wheelchair accessible and are driven by commercially licensed drivers who have taken defensive driving and sensitivity training.

Heartland Express started a new bus commuter route from Cambridge to East Bethel where riders meet the MTC Transit buses traveling into Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Commuter run goes from 5am to 7am to meet the morning MTC buses. Then 5pm to 7pm in the evening to meet the buses coming back. The fares for this commuter run is $2 each way.

Heartland Express has also extended their north Chisago County bus route up to Pine City to the Pine Technical & Community College and also to the Pine City Wal-Mart. Cambridge residents would have to transfer buses in North Branch.

The Heartland Express invites all people to see how much easier it is to let someone else do the driving as they ride along in climate controlled comfort, leaving you to be able to do other things besides worry about road conditions and traffic.
