Street Light Utility

On January 2, 2018, the Cambridge City Council adopted ordinance 657 creating a street light utility.  This utility fund will pay for all of the costs associated with maintaining the street lighting within the City of Cambridge.  Previously, the street light costs were funded by property taxes.  Due to the significant amount of tax-exempt properties within Cambridge that don’t pay taxes such has the hospital and the community college, the City hopes to more equitably share the costs of street lighting under the new structure.

Under the ordinance, all properties located within 150 feet of a city light pole are subject to the street lighting utility fee unless the property is vacant land.
